Spirit test page Colors copy by dan-sch

Among the cooler things that have ever happened to me, here's this: as you may have heard elsewhere on the internet this week, I am the penciler/inker on Dynamite Comics' WILL EISNER'S THE SPIRIT. I'm in for a twelve issue arc, written by Matt Wagner and colored by my good pal Brennan Wagner, who put my name in the ring in the first place.

The words "Spirit" and "the" alone make this an honor. Add in the chance to work with Matt Wagner, one of my all-time biggest heroes and inspirations, and to be colored by a friend who I really creatively click with, and you've got an amazing gig going. But then there the story Matt's written for this. This is more than just another Matt Wagner Dynamite pulp book, like Green Hornet or Shadow (years one, both, and excellent comics). It's more than just another Spirit reboot (although big ups to Darwyn Cooke, Sergio Argones, and Moritat, et all). It's bigger. It's different... well, it's all there in the headline that opens the story: WHO KILLED THE SPIRIT?

Holy hell. That pushes this over the top. This is now a dream job. I'm wrapping up the first issue this week, and I'm going right into the second issue from there. I could probably take a couple days off, but nuts to that. I'm too excited to see the story finished on the page.

WILL EISNER'S THE SPIRIT #1 drops July 1st. For now, enjoy some character designs. And don't worry -- I promise I've gotten better at drawing everybody since I did these.

Oh wow, how the hell did I miss this? Amazing, I love the Spirit, but we don't have much issues of him here in Serbia. Now will have to look for it to admire your work ;)

Congratulations Dan - I've been a fan of the SPIRIT since I found the whole Warren series in mint condition in a back shelf magazine rack at my local library about 10 years ago and I have to say that with you drawing and Matt Wagner writing out of all the comics coming out this year THIS is the book I'm most looking forward to adding to my collection.
Love the designs!
Onward and Upward in your Career!!!

I saw page 1. Great layout. Nice clean line. The action moved well from panel to panel. You're gonna kill that book.

Let it be known that I've only read exactly one Spirit comic.

Not for a lack of love, simply that there's so much great stuff in the world.

As an unapologetic geek, I absolutely recognize the enormity of the honor.

And now that you're on the book, I'm all out of excuses to avoid jumping into Eisner's arguably most famous creation.

Seeing people like you and :iconjebriodo: breaking into the industry at large after years of stalking you over here is nothing short of inspiring. One day I hope to join you, but I'll have to take the long, mild-mannered kindergarten teacher by day and self-publisher by night-route to get there.

Love your take on Ebony. Much more PC, but still recognizable as the bumbling yet tough sidekick we all know and love. Commissioner Dolan is spot-on. Those are the things that stand out for me. Everything else I can only sum up as 'perfect' and leave it at that.

My friend, thank you. I'm curious -- what's the one Spirit comic you've read? And how was it?

And thanks for pointing me towards Jed's art! Really great, clean work. Hope he stays at DC for a while. He's just the kind of shot in the arm they could use more of right now.

Well, I don't remember the title or anything. Basically, Colt gets tricked into signing a marriage certificate by yet another femme fatale that's crazy about him (P'Gell, perhaps?). A moment that stands out to me in memory would have to be when Ellen is sulking about her love marrying another woman. Once she tells Ebony about it, he exclaims (paraphrased, as the story was translated into my native Swedish) "Married? And he didn't even consult with me first!" It ends with the woman having a pang of consciousness, revoking the marriage certificate and crying silently to herself. I can't remember the title, but it was definitely under Will Eisner's watch.

It was certainly not a bad story, but I've never read another Spirit story to compare it to. It was most definitely a story with impact, since I can still recall it.

Personally, if we're talking shots and DC, I'd aim for the head. :iconrimshotplz: I've enjoyed the Multiversity and I'm cautiously optimistic about their "soft relaunch" coming in June. It's just the whole "sweep history under the rug, rinse and repeat" routine that irks me. And I'm not a fan of Supes new spit curl-less street-brawler look post-Convergence. :lmao: Ugh, sorry about nerd-ranting.

... And I just now realized how prophetic your choice of DA icon would prove to be.

Haha! I know right? It's crazy -- the first page of the first issue features a single image of the Spirit, and damned if it isn't the spitting image of this little guy to the left of this paragraph. It's nuts. And thanks again!! Tell me what you think of the work as I post more of it, por favor.

I certainly will, Eisner. :iconrimshotplz:

Also... *snaps fingers*

"Silken Floss, M.D". March 9th, 1947. THAT's the one Spirit tale I've read. (Had to skim through the Archives to figure it out)
