Over the past few years of writing the Fowl, I've noticed various character quirks organically developing before my eyes. It usually happens with Cross (she really bosses me around -- I get back at her by revoking her screen-time), but in this case I'm referring to the little noises the Fowl makes. Right under my nose, he's developed a grunting shorthand for what's going on in his head. For instance:

"Heh." When he sees how things fit together, which he finds mildly amusing. Often, he's laughing at a joke or pun he's about to make.

"Hah." Similar to 'heh', but a much sharper sound that usually means he's about to murder someone. Or is presently murdering someone. Also used in place of 'I told you so', or 'I'm much smarter than you and this is why'.

"Henh." Used in this page, is when he realizes something's bugging him. A philosophical problem, usually. If followed by an ellipsis (...), he's actively trying to figure it out.

"Feh." Haughty, intellectual disgust.

And so forth. I don't know, it surprises me sometimes. My art babies are learning to talk.
